Let’s Do This, Lolla

Music Festival Prep

I cringe a bit when I hear the phrase “getting festival ready.”  Perhaps because I’ve been getting emails for what feels like months from PR people with that subject line.  Music festivals are not some glamorous affair. Getting festival ready is more of a pack extra deodorant, pray it doesn’t rain and hope you don’t get too annoyed with teenagers on Molly.  Which is precisely what I’m doing pre-Lollapalooza. I know I sound like a real curmudgeon so I’ll check that right now. I’m going all three days and I’m actually really excited. And guys, I’m ready. The tub of Soapwalla is already set aside; here’s what else I’ve got going on.

Music festivals and rompers don’t mix…hi, port-a-potty. I’ll be wearing this dress in black and this tank. The cutout detail is the cutest and it hits pretty long for a crop. // No heat tools necessary – my hair will be wash and go all weekend. As it’s air drying, I’ve been applying the new Bumble ‘Don’t’ Blow It’ serum into my hair, twisting the ends so it gives it a bit of undone texture. // Keep the makeup minimal since you’re likely to sweat it off anyway. I found the BEST cream eye shadow from Charlotte Tilbury that lasts all day. It’s legit waterproof and glides on my eyelids like a silk mousse. The creamy Jean layered under the taupe Marie Antoinette is my jam. // My main accessory are my Warby shades. Love the pink tortoise print. // I’ll absorb the sweat with ILIA’s Fade Into You powder. Cuts the shine and hot mess-ness without chalkiness. // SPF is a must – especially if you plan on being outside for three days. I go through tubes of Neutrogena Baby SPF (it’s a zinc/titanium dioxide blend), apply the Fresh Sugar Nude throughout the day (SPF 15) and wear the IT Cosmetics CC Cream as my foundation. No joke, this is some next level CC cream.  It gives me peace of mind with the high SPF coverage and it actually corrects skin with peptides, niacin, algae, vitamins (A, C, B & E!), hyaluronic acid and hydrolyzed collagen. Damn, right?

Anyone else Lolla-bound?

Destination Palm Springs

PalmSprings

I’m off to a desert adventure this week! It will be my first trip to Palm Springs and I’m pretty happy to be making it with the Clementine Daily ladies. This whole desert heat thing is always a foreign feeling to my body. I’m not quite sure what 112 degrees will feel like but I imagine it will be an outdoor sauna. Lack of humidity = better hair days, yes? I’m packing light for this one.

Every summer vacay needs at least one beach read. I joined in on Birchbox’s virtual book club and The Vacationers is first up. // I’ve been wearing Target’s mix and match bathing suits for years. I like this sporty navy combo. // On me, this Anthropologie Shibori Maxi Dress drapes past my toes. It’s a light and flowy stunner with a lower back cutout that hits at a very flattering area. // Yes, these Madewell sandals again. I wear them with everything! // A new Fresh Sugar! The bright pink Tulip is perfect for summer. // I actually have about three different forms of SPF packed. For my body, it’s the natural Yes to Cucumbers. // I love the pattern on this floral tunic. The gauzy texture makes for the perfect beach cover up and it looks pretty good with skinny jeans, too (for cool Chicago nights, that is!)

Beach Beauty Essentials

Mexico-Travel-Essentials

I’ve finally got this packing light thing down. All of my necessities for five days in Tulum came with me carry-on only. I’m prepared to blind everyone at the pool with this sequined tote. I was eyeing it up at Anthropologie before the holidays and spotted it again a few weeks ago for more than half off. Score! It fits a ton – even my laptop if I want it to. For Tulum, I’ve packed it with a new book, a stack of magazines, my iPad (JUST finished the first season of House of Cards) and a few other essentials.

The Frends headphones fold in half, which make them so travel-friendly. I love they are especially made for women so they don’t feel or look ginormous. These sunglasses I snagged at Old Navy are another purchase I’m so happy about. I love the rose gold accent and patterned stems – and the fact that I only paid $15 for them. It’s the little things, guys.

Mexico-Travel

SPF is the name of the game on this trip. My quart-sized bag is packed to the brim with several tubes of Supergoop and I’ve brought along Juice Beauty CC Cream for another layer of SPF on the face. Gives enough coverage and also adds a dewy finish. Add a touch of this on the cheeks and and there’s my two-step beauty routine in Tulum. There’s Fresh Sugar Honey Balm so I don’t forget to SPF my lips and I skipped the spritz in favor of La Bella Figura Travel Therapy. I always dab it on my wrists when I fly and it doubles as a perfume. A very sexy and relaxing one at that!

For more on Tulum, check out Insta. I keep promising to keep it light on the beach photos, because…ya know, 10 degrees back at home, but, it’s all so pretty to photograph here!

The Balm Files: Lip Edition

I’m ready for this polar vortex to be over. I thought I knew cold, being a native ‘sconnie and all, but this is on a whole new level. I’m balm-ing like a mad woman to prevent dry skin. Face, body, lips — everything! I even put some argan oil balm on Betty’s paws because they were getting a little rough.

I’m over on The Naked Canvas today talking lip care with the adorable and stylish Stephanie. Naturally, there’s all sorts of balm chatter! From my favorite budget buys and luxe balms to the tinted varietals. Check it out here! Stay warm and cozy, guys.

The List: October 2013

October-List

I think we’re all pretty jazzed that it’s October. I’ve seen this quote from the Anne of Green Gables author no fewer than a dozen times this week in my Instagram and Pinterest feeds. October is pretty magical, though. What’s not to love about the first real chill of fall and leaves changing colors? Here’s everything I’m loving for the month ahead!

Feminine fragrance. Once September wraps, it’s time to retire my summer scent. I’ve been looking for an ultra-feminine fragrance for fall, in part to balance out the “boyfriend” style wardrobe I love in the fall. Oversized everything is just so cozy! When I was previewing the new beauty floor at Macy’s a few weeks ago, I spritzed on the new Estee Lauder Modern Muse. The ladies at the counter explained to me how there are two different scent profiles that you may pick up, depending on your body chemistry. There’s the woodsy vanilla and amber musk side or jasmine and dewy citrus. The jasmine hit me right away and I’ve been wearing it every day since.

Glittery nails. I’m obsessed with the butter LONDON “Rock Your Colour” glitters for fall, especially Indigo Punk and the rust-colored Brown Sugar. Just look at this color! When the sun hits them, they glisten like crazy.

Balms, butters and more balms. With the cooler temps, I’m all in with balms. After a steamy bath, I slather my entire body in them. Ellovi Butter, rich in coconut, macadamia, marula, hemp and shea (those are the only five ingredients!), melts into skin like, well…butter. It’s not heavy at all, making it the perfect October balm. I’ve started to test the Tammy Fender Intensive Repair Balm and so far, it lives up to all the praise it has earned. And I’ve discovered the perfect alternative to Aquaphor with CV SkinLabs Restorative Balm. It’s packed with anti-histamine, -oxidants and -inflammatories so it actually heals and soothes!

Cherry lips. Just a tint of red is what you’ll get from Fresh Sugar Cherry. Add a messy bun and a chambray shirt and it’s like you walked out of a J. Crew catalog.

Exfoliation. My cleansing ritual is getting a major upgrade this month. I’ve started to use May Lindstrom The Clean Dirt, a blend of cleansing clays, spices and salts that you blend with water to activate. It’s like microderm at home but your skin is soft and plump afterward instead of “scrubbed.”

Boy shirts. I love men’s flannel shirts and am counting down the days until I can wear them on the regular. The more fem version from Madewell is majorly inspiring me. And, I spy a budget version of that skirt at Target. How cute would this outfit be with tights and boots?

How I’m Styling My Summer

ColorMeStyled-SPF

One of my favorite faces at Chicago Blogger Network events is always Erin Bassett, of Color Me Styled. So I was excited when she asked me to guest blog on how I’m styling my summer. You could say I approached the topic in the non-traditional sense. It’s all about SPF! It’s the ultimate (albeit invisible) staple accessory of summer. Because sun-damaged skin is never in style!

Head on over to Color Me Styled to check it out!

Fresh Sugar Shine Lip Treatment

Fresh-Sugar-Shine-Lip-Treatment

Welcome to the family, Fresh Sugar Shine Lip Treatment. I think you’re going to fit in well around here. As the first and only gloss in the cult classic Fresh Sugar line, you are a welcome addition. Sugar Shine has that familiar lemon scent but offers a whole new bag of tricks. Inside the tube, is a slightly pearled, nearly clear gloss that translates as volume on the lips. The kind of shine that has a way of getting you that much closer to Angelina Jolie lips. To get even closer, concentrate an extra dab in just the center of lips. A little extra shine in the middle gives the appearance of a more plumped up lip. I like it because it is soft, cushy and conditioning. It plays well with the other Sugar Tinted Lip Treatments, as you can layer to your heart’s content. But if you do, I’d recommend you dab the wand on your finger and then pat on to your lips. Nothing triggers my OCD like contaminating a clear gloss with color. Right??  I love how it looks layered over Sugar Petal. Since Petal is a close match for my natural lip shade, it gives me the “these are totally my lips in their natural state” polished look. I can never say no to new Fresh Sugar, and I’m totally loving this new addition, which I snagged at Sephora a few weeks ago.

Fresh Sugar Petal

Fresh-Sugar-Petal

I’m a devoted Fresh follower, particularly of the Sugar Lip Treatments. Each gorgeously encased tube has a place in my beauty routine. There’s not a dud in the bunch. Sugar Passion tops my list of favorite red tinted balms – it’s seriously the best ever. Sugar Plum always satisfies my urge to wear a deep berry lip at the first signs of fall. Sugar Coral launched at the height of the tangerine tango craze of 2012, thus being my everything for an entire summer. Sugar Honey, the nudey of the gang is a perfect warm beige that goes with everything.  And of course, the newest (until now) Sugar Berry wowed me with its “not quite pink or purple but definitely the perfect balance of both” brightening color.

But for years (YEARS!), I have been wondering when Fresh might release a soft pink. Fresh Sugar Petal is that long awaited answer. And it is everything I hoped it would be. Petal is like Honey’s cousin, a light pink that resembles my natural lip color. It has a mauvey rose undertone making it so natural and wearable.  It has me thinking spring and will be the perfect complement to the season. In other words, I’m going to wear this Sugar constantly.

Fresh Sugar Petal is currently available at Sephora and should be launching any day on Fresh.com.

For other Fresh followers, what is your favorite Sugar?
