How I Organize My Makeup

I really don’t like to move. Yet, here I am about to make my third one in three years. It was last Fourth of July weekend that we moved in to our first place together. Later this month, we are moving to a bigger place that I plan to turn into a Scandinavian wonderland of greenery, white walls and neutral tones. I realized when we were in Sweden and Finland that I simply do not have enough plants in my life. A new place also means a fresh chance at organization. There are parts of our current apartment I really love – like our bedroom that is one of a kind, what you get in a home built in the 1800s – and elements that do not work for me: like my bathroom. I’ve never quite loved how I stored my beauty products here. I scatter things around – beauty products are decor in my world – but I like storing and doing my makeup in my bathroom. Larger countertops are in our future and that is very exciting. I will, however, miss my medicine cabinet. I’ve gotten really used to my skin care having a ‘Top Shelf’ style home.

Soon, all of this will get packed in boxes, so I thought I’d share you how I’m currently storing my makeup.

I use this glass and copper metal organizer to store the makeup I’m using now, everything that’s in my seasonal beauty wardrobe. The different compartments make it easy to keep all of my makeup options yet it is small enough to keep on my bathroom counter, which isn’t huge. I also use recycled candles to store brushes and mascaras, liners, brow products, etc. Basically anything with a tall and skinny handle works well in a candle.

I love the Nars candle for brushes. It’s bigger than a standard Diptyque so I can store a lot of brushes in it, even the wide-handled Real Techniques. I do recycle my empty Diptyques for other beauty products though. The small size is perfect to store q-tips and perfume samples. If you’re going to burn a luxury candle, you owe it to yourself to keep it around after the fact, right? At the moment, I’m working on future beauty storage with the Overose Nudesse candle.

And, then there’s the archive. After the purge I did this year, I have less stuff but still makeup that I don’t want in my everyday storage. I ordered these acrylic stackable drawers from Amazon and a topper as well. The topper is my favorite part but it is not a perfect fit, despite it being the same brand. It’s like the tiniest bit off, so it technically works it just drives me nuts because it isn’t exact.

I can’t wait to improve on this in our new home. And, I feel way better that I already got did a big purge so now I’m moving with less.

I could look at beauty organization pics all.damn.day so welcome any tips you might have. How do you control the chaos?

P.S. I’m over on Meg Biram’s blog talking about organization along with other beauty bloggers and experts.

Destination Palm Springs

PalmSprings

I’m off to a desert adventure this week! It will be my first trip to Palm Springs and I’m pretty happy to be making it with the Clementine Daily ladies. This whole desert heat thing is always a foreign feeling to my body. I’m not quite sure what 112 degrees will feel like but I imagine it will be an outdoor sauna. Lack of humidity = better hair days, yes? I’m packing light for this one.

Every summer vacay needs at least one beach read. I joined in on Birchbox’s virtual book club and The Vacationers is first up. // I’ve been wearing Target’s mix and match bathing suits for years. I like this sporty navy combo. // On me, this Anthropologie Shibori Maxi Dress drapes past my toes. It’s a light and flowy stunner with a lower back cutout that hits at a very flattering area. // Yes, these Madewell sandals again. I wear them with everything! // A new Fresh Sugar! The bright pink Tulip is perfect for summer. // I actually have about three different forms of SPF packed. For my body, it’s the natural Yes to Cucumbers. // I love the pattern on this floral tunic. The gauzy texture makes for the perfect beach cover up and it looks pretty good with skinny jeans, too (for cool Chicago nights, that is!)

The Gold Standard

Holiday-Gift-Guide-Gold

Behold, tis the season for gift giving. But we’re all friends here, so it’s OK if I admit that I’m shopping for me, too, right? The holidays really test my self-control.  I’m kicking off gift guides today and each is filled with the most incredible prezzies. For yourself, for others or both — I’m not judging. Or, in this case, gilt-ing you.

Sasha told me about the Gold Box at A Night for Green Beauty back in September and I have been eagerly awaiting! It’s so pretty in its special box and it’s Ilia, so you know it’s going to wear beautifully.

This ‘lip tease’ mug is the cutest. I’d couple this with a box of tea and a nice handwritten note.

The Threshold jewelry boxes are such a great Target find. I actually got the smaller size for my nieces and I can’t wait to see them fill it with their most special things.

I love how this bib necklace has a delicate and feminine feel.

Butter London Stratford Honey Overcoat makes every polish look like it was dipped in gold glitter.

Gold leaf lip balm? Girl, you fancy.

This Jonathan Adler Metallic Zebra Dish is begging to be on top of my a dresser, holding tiny treasures.

Every girl deserves a little RMS Beauty in her life. The Solar Cream Eyeshadow is a beautiful golden beige hue.

P.S. Since it is Cyber Monday and all…worth noting that Net-a-Porter has 15% with code HOLIDAYBEAUTY (I already snagged an Ilia Gold Box for moi!) and Tatcha has a 20% Friends & Family sale through December 11. Go for the gold leaf!

Nature’s Botox, Chanel Holiday and the Most Flattering Blush Color, Ever ?

SW-Basics-Hibiscus-Mask

I’ll be testing the new S.W. Basics Hibiscus Mask this weekend. Did you know hibiscus has a reputation as “nature’s Botox?” I have a feeling this one is going to be really good.

RMS’ Buriti Bronzer is on its way! I snatched it up on Spirit Beauty Lounge yesterday because I could not wait ANY longer. Seeing it on Taylor sold me.

I loved Megan’s series on Aster & Bay this week – it’s a “new to me” line of skin care that is natural and affordable.

I got these ankle boots at Target this week. Such a good deal!

The first looks at Chanel’s holiday beauty collection. The platinum bronze Illusion d’Ombre shadow is on my wish list.

Do you use your makeup bag as a clutch? You’ll be inspired to after seeing this.

Green ice cubes? Yeah, my morning smoothies are about to get that much better.

I can’t decide if this Boston Terrier wall mount is creepy or perfect for my living room. What do you think?

Is red the most flattering shade of blush, ever?

The List: October 2013

October-List

I think we’re all pretty jazzed that it’s October. I’ve seen this quote from the Anne of Green Gables author no fewer than a dozen times this week in my Instagram and Pinterest feeds. October is pretty magical, though. What’s not to love about the first real chill of fall and leaves changing colors? Here’s everything I’m loving for the month ahead!

Feminine fragrance. Once September wraps, it’s time to retire my summer scent. I’ve been looking for an ultra-feminine fragrance for fall, in part to balance out the “boyfriend” style wardrobe I love in the fall. Oversized everything is just so cozy! When I was previewing the new beauty floor at Macy’s a few weeks ago, I spritzed on the new Estee Lauder Modern Muse. The ladies at the counter explained to me how there are two different scent profiles that you may pick up, depending on your body chemistry. There’s the woodsy vanilla and amber musk side or jasmine and dewy citrus. The jasmine hit me right away and I’ve been wearing it every day since.

Glittery nails. I’m obsessed with the butter LONDON “Rock Your Colour” glitters for fall, especially Indigo Punk and the rust-colored Brown Sugar. Just look at this color! When the sun hits them, they glisten like crazy.

Balms, butters and more balms. With the cooler temps, I’m all in with balms. After a steamy bath, I slather my entire body in them. Ellovi Butter, rich in coconut, macadamia, marula, hemp and shea (those are the only five ingredients!), melts into skin like, well…butter. It’s not heavy at all, making it the perfect October balm. I’ve started to test the Tammy Fender Intensive Repair Balm and so far, it lives up to all the praise it has earned. And I’ve discovered the perfect alternative to Aquaphor with CV SkinLabs Restorative Balm. It’s packed with anti-histamine, -oxidants and -inflammatories so it actually heals and soothes!

Cherry lips. Just a tint of red is what you’ll get from Fresh Sugar Cherry. Add a messy bun and a chambray shirt and it’s like you walked out of a J. Crew catalog.

Exfoliation. My cleansing ritual is getting a major upgrade this month. I’ve started to use May Lindstrom The Clean Dirt, a blend of cleansing clays, spices and salts that you blend with water to activate. It’s like microderm at home but your skin is soft and plump afterward instead of “scrubbed.”

Boy shirts. I love men’s flannel shirts and am counting down the days until I can wear them on the regular. The more fem version from Madewell is majorly inspiring me. And, I spy a budget version of that skirt at Target. How cute would this outfit be with tights and boots?

bluemercury Celebrates 14 Years

bluemercury-14-anniversary-gift

And….it’s Monday again. How was your weekend? I spent some time visiting friends in Madison and it was perfect. Fresh air, great dinners, farmer’s market on the square and — my favorite — ample terrace time. I’m forever in love with that city. I didn’t realize it when we planned this weekend, but it also coincided with the Phillip Lim for Target launch which means…SUBURBAN TARGET. I wouldn’t have dared brave that trip in Chicago and battle it out with the fashion-obsessed ladies of this town, but my girlfriend and I decided to head to the Sun Prairie Target (read: cows and open land) about 10 miles from Madison and we hit the jackpot. There were only five people in the entire store when it opened at 8am. And in that moment I hatched a plan to definitely do that again in the future. Bring it on Target! I’m ready for your designer mania now.

While I was catching up on emails on our drive back, I came across the scoop on bluemercury’s anniversary gift. The boutique is celebrating 14 years of beauty this month with a special treat for shoppers who spend $150. Marla Malcolm Beck, founder of bluemercury, pulled together her favorite products that help get her through her busy weeks. For those of you who read Marla’s beauty blog regularly (like moi!), you’ll recognize quite a few of these from her past posts. This gift is a take home version of her bathroom! There’s the Ren Radiance Renewal Mask she likes to use on Thursday nights while she catches up on email and the Molton Brown Heavenly Gingerlily bath gel she uses as bubble bath. The gift is available in stores or online the rest of the month or until it runs out of stock. And, if you need a refresher on why I love this store, may I direct you to my very first 312 Shops post?
